A participatory process is a sequence of participatory activities (e.g. first filling out a survey, then making proposals, discussing them in face-to-face or virtual meetings, and finally prioritizing them) with the aim of defining and making a decision on a specific topic.

Examples of participatory processes are: a process of electing committee members (where candidatures are first presented, then debated and finally a candidacy is chosen), participatory budgets (where proposals are made, valued economically and voted on with the money available), a strategic planning process, the collaborative drafting of a regulation or norm, the design of an urban space or the production of a public policy plan.

Participants get to know a bit more about the process and actively contribute to the choice of topics to be discussed at the deliberation.

Citizens from all over Europe come together in Brussels for one and a half days of lively discussions. In an innovative EU-wide deliberation run by professional facilitators, you will discuss the future of the European Green Deal - Europe’s plan to decarbonise and become a climate neutral continent by 2050. Citizens will discuss the future direction of the ecological transition in Europe, participating in different themed focus groups such as the transforming the food and energy system, changing our economy, and protecting biodiversity.

The discussion does not stop here! The main results of the deliberation will be summarised and published on the online platform for further discussions before the European elections in June 2024.

About this process

A unique opportunity to deliberate with others on the future direction of the ecological transition in Europe, participating in different themed focus groups such as transforming the food and energy system, changing our economy, and protecting biodiversity.

Co-organised by the EEB and partners within the framework of the REAL_DEAL project, this discussion is part of a Horizon 2020 research project focused on reshaping citizens' participation and deliberative democracy in Europe. We aim to explore new formats to bring underrepresented voices to the forefront of policymaking. The insights are aimed at galvanising decision-makers to consider new modes of deliberative democracy at the EU (European Union) level, as well as propel the ideas of participants into the spotlight for future policymaking. To tackle the great challenges of our time, we need a wide-ranging and inclusive dialogue, therefore we are happy to welcome you to join the conversation.
